Transpersonal Psychology emerged in the1960’s as an extended branch of Humanistic Psychology, encompassing a less one-sided view of mental health and dysfunction. It is an Integrative Theory in that the belief is in treating the whole person– mind, body and spirit, seeking balance. It is a philosophical belief in the inherent wisdom, and power of self-healing possessed by each individual, albeit sometimes latent, undiscovered, or over-shadowed by psychosomatic illness and neuroses.
A Transpersonal Counselor works from the precept that each person has the innate ability to create a life which holds truth, meaning, and purpose. The Counselor serves as a guide to self-discovery. Unlike traditional theories, which hold emotional suffering as a symptom of disease, Transpersonal Psychology sees problems and difficulties as challenges, and as opportunities to move forward in our personal growth.
The Transpersonal Counselor remains sensitive to the depth of a client’s suffering. Nothing is permanent. The journey begins the moment the decision is made to seek counseling.
